Route 1: The Garden Route – Along the spectacular coastline
The Garden Route is one of the most famous and popular travel routes in South Africa. On this route you will find a picturesque coastal landscape with breathtaking beaches, impressive mountains and lush forests. Start your round trip in Cape Town and drive along the coast to Port Elizabeth, while exploring the charming towns of Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. The official start of the Garden Route begins in Mossel Bay. You’ll find parking bays along your drive where you can stop and enjoy the spectacular views and capture your journey with some photos. Some even offer the possibility for a picnic. Again, like everywhere else in the world, don’t leave trash lying around – for the sake of the animals and the environment. It’s best to always have a bag for trash in your car.
The route combines everything a traveler’s heart desires on 369 km: fascinating nature, spectacular wildlife in the national parks, varied and traditional cuisine.
My personal tip: Enjoy fish and seafood at the Big Blue in Mossel Bay – but beware, depending on the wind, one or the other drop of sea will splash in your face. The sunset from here is picturesque.
