The ultimate South Africa car rental round trip

The ultimate South Africa car rental round trip: Discover the country of contrasts

The best itineraries for your South Africa car rental round trip

South Africa is a country full of breathtaking landscapes, diverse cultures and fascinating wildlife. A car rental round trip is the best way to explore this diverse country, enjoy its beauty to the fullest and get to know the culture at your own pace. It does not matter whether you are traveling to Cape Town or Johannesburg from Switzerland or Germany. In both cities you will find the largest car rental providers directly at the airport.

Start your round trip from Cape Town or Johannesburg and experience the most beautiful areas of South Africa – experience an unforgettable vacation.

In this article I present you the best itineraries for your South Africa rental car round trip. Many of the routes I have already traveled several times myself and can claim with a clear conscience that you will experience the beauty and fascination of South Africa up close on these routes.

Route 1: The Garden Route – Along the spectacular coastline

The Garden Route is one of the most famous and popular travel routes in South Africa. On this route you will find a picturesque coastal landscape with breathtaking beaches, impressive mountains and lush forests. Start your round trip in Cape Town and drive along the coast to Port Elizabeth, while exploring the charming towns of Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. The official start of the Garden Route begins in Mossel Bay. You’ll find parking bays along your drive where you can stop and enjoy the spectacular views and capture your journey with some photos. Some even offer the possibility for a picnic. Again, like everywhere else in the world, don’t leave trash lying around – for the sake of the animals and the environment. It’s best to always have a bag for trash in your car.

The route combines everything a traveler’s heart desires on 369 km: fascinating nature, spectacular wildlife in the national parks, varied and traditional cuisine.

My personal tip: Enjoy fish and seafood at the Big Blue in Mossel Bay – but beware, depending on the wind, one or the other drop of sea will splash in your face. The sunset from here is picturesque.

Route 2: Panorama Route – The beauty of the Drakensberg Mountains

The Panorama Route between Johannesburg and Kruger National Park takes you through the stunning Drakensberg Mountains in Mpumalanga Province. Discover breathtaking views of deep gorges, majestic waterfalls and colorful rock formations. Visit the Blyde River Canyon (the third largest in the world), Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the spectacular God’s Window.

The stops along the canyon are some of the most breathtaking in all of South Africa and are absolutely worth seeing! Each stop offers spectacular views and is an unforgettable experience. From the majestic panoramic views to the fascinating geological formations, the canyon offers a multitude of highlights worth admiring. Immerse yourself in the beauty and splendor of the canyon and be enchanted by its unique atmosphere!

Don’t forget Sabie Waterfalls – not quite as well known and thus not too crowded. From hidden natural pools to majestic cascades, these waterfalls offer a true paradise for nature lovers and adventurers.

The approximately 100 km long Panorama Route can easily be traveled all year round. Between May and August it is dry and cool here and therefore the visibility is clearer. The vegetation is not as dense as in the summer months, making wildlife viewing easier. In summer, it can also rain more often and fog develops.

My personal tip is to take your time driving to different viewpoints. Each one will give you a new, spectacular perspective on the canyon. Don’t forget to pack a picnic basket and enjoy your “lunch with a view”.

Route 3: Kruger National Park – On Safari in the Wilderness

Animal lovers and nature enthusiasts are in for a treat now: a South Africa car rental tour wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the world-famous Kruger National Park. The park is home to an incredible variety of wildlife, including elephants, lions, giraffes and rhinos. As the country’s largest game reserve, established in 1898 under then-President Paul Kruger, Kruger National Park is known worldwide. Drive through the park for exciting game viewing and unforgettable safari experiences.

Depending on which entrance at the park you use, your drive from Johannesburg will take approximately 5-6 hours – so we recommend at least one night’s stay after arriving in Johannesburg before heading to the national park.

Due to the size of the park (19’500 square kilometers after all) it is recommended to go exploring with a trained guide. In principle, you can also drive through the park with your own car, but especially in the summer months, when the vegetation is dense and lush, the trained eyes of the guides help enormously to discover animals like leopards.

My personal tip: Treat yourself to a game drive with a trained guide for the ultimate experience. This way you will spot animals that you might otherwise pass by. Plus, the guides can answer any questions you have about the park’s flora and fauna. And you won’t have to concentrate on the road.

Route 4: Winelands – enjoyment and relaxation

For wine lovers, the South African winelands is an absolute paradise. Also for this special trip, start your car rental round trip in Cape Town and visit the picturesque wine landscapes of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl – only 1 hour away from Cape Town. Taste exquisite wines, enjoy first-class gastronomy and relax in luxurious wine estates. It’s best to choose one of the regions, drive to your booked accommodation and then explore each winery by Uber, on foot or in Franschhoek by the Wine Tram.

Can’t decide between these three regions? No problem, I’d be happy to give you a brief overview of each special feature:

Franschhoek:

The Franschhoek wine region is located in a picturesque landscape and is known for its French colonial history. The speciality of this region lies in its outstanding expertise in the production of Méthode Cap Classique (traditional bottle fermentation) as well as in the production of first class white wines and some excellent red wines. The microclimate and diverse soil conditions create optimal conditions for growing grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Franschhoek is also known for its renowned wineries and award-winning restaurants that offer the perfect combination of wine, food and scenic beauty.

Stellenbosch:

Stellenbosch is one of South Africa’s oldest and best-known wine regions. It is characterized by a great diversity of grape varieties and terroirs. Stellenbosch’s distinctive feature is the high quality of its red wines, especially from the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz grape varieties. The region is also known for its unique white wines such as Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc. Stellenbosch offers a variety of wineries, from historic to modern and innovative. The charming university town of Stellenbosch itself is a popular destination for wine lovers, offering a rich culture, excellent restaurants and world-class wine tastings.

Paarl:

The Paarl wine region is known for its picturesque beauty and powerful red wines. The climate and soil conditions are ideal for growing robust red wine varieties such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage, an indigenous grape variety of South Africa. Paarl’s distinctiveness also lies in its historical significance as the birthplace of the South African wine industry. The region boasts a number of award-winning wineries, from traditional, family-run operations to modern wineries. Paarl is also a popular destination for visitors who want to experience the stunning scenery, cultural attractions and world-class wines.

My personal tip: There is, of course, no right or wrong answer to the question of which winery is the best. It all depends on personal taste. For me, not only the wine itself plays a role but also the charm of the surroundings. My personal favorite is the Laborie winery in Paarl. The tasting takes place in an old manor house and for the small and big hunger you have the choice between several restaurants.

Route 5: KwaZulu-Natal – Coast, Culture and Wildlife

KwaZulu-Natal is the only province that has the name of an ethnic group in its name. It offers a unique blend of coastal scenery, cultural attractions and wildlife viewing. Explore the subtropical coastline of Durban, visit the historic Zulu Kingdom and embark on a safari in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park to spot the majestic Big Five.

Let’s start with the coast: KwaZulu-Natal offers some of the most beautiful beaches in South Africa. The coastline stretches for hundreds of kilometers and offers both tranquil seaside resorts and vibrant surfer’s paradises. Popular destinations such as Durban and Umhlanga beckon with golden sands, turquoise waters and an abundance of water sports activities.

The region also has a rich cultural history to explore. Visit the historic town of Pietermaritzburg, known for its Victorian architecture and colonial charm. Explore the heritage sites of the Zulu nation and immerse yourself in their fascinating history. You can visit traditional Zulu villages, experience traditional dances and learn more about the culture and customs of this proud community.

KwaZulu-Natal is a region full of adventure and unforgettable experiences. Whether you are interested in beach activities, natural beauty or cultural exploration, this region will inspire you with its diversity and beauty. Pack your bags and start the vacation of a lifetime!

My personal tip: Visit the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. Built for the 2010 World Cup, it now offers various tours and visits. Especially recommended is the Adventure Walk – go to the roof of the stadium and experience a panoramic view over the city and the sea.

Route 6: West Coast – Wide beaches and charming villages

The West Coast of South Africa is known for its endless sandy beaches, picturesque fishing villages and fascinating birdlife. Drive north along the coast from Cape Town and explore charming towns like Paternoster, Langebaan and Lamberts Bay. Enjoy fresh seafood and bird watching in renowned nature reserves such as West Coast National Park. This reserve is home to an impressive variety of species in addition to birds, including an abundance of flamingos, antelopes, zebras, turtles and other wildlife. Here, you have the opportunity to explore the landscape on the well-maintained hiking trails and experience the beauty of nature firsthand.

You can cross the park and arrive at Langebaan at the other end. This charming coastal town is known for its relaxed atmosphere and water sports. You can take time to enjoy the picturesque surroundings, relax on the beach, or take a kayak tour to explore the coast from a different perspective.

Your adventure along the West Coast will eventually take you to the Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, a transfrontier nature reserve of outstanding beauty. This area, recognized by UNESCO World Heritage Sites, offers you the opportunity to explore the unique desert landscape, experience unforgettable sunsets and observe rare desert animals such as springbok and klipsheep. But beware: this area can only be accessed with a 4×4 off-road vehicle.

My personal tip: Have you ever stayed on a houseboat? If not, you can make up for it in West Coast National Park. Book an overnight stay and let yourself be driven on one of the boats and spend a relaxing stay, where you can leave your everyday life behind and switch off. It takes about 1.5 hours to get here from Cape Town.

Route 7: On safari with a rental car

In many national parks you have the possibility to go on an exploration tour with your own car. The roads are also well developed in the parks. Keep your eyes open and discover the fascinating flora and fauna on your own.

The advantage of a safari with a rental car is that you can determine your own schedule. You can set out early in the morning to watch the majestic lions at dawn, or take advantage of the sunset to marvel at the elegant giraffes in golden light. The choice is entirely up to you. You are not bound by set tours and can tailor the safari to suit your preferences.

The comfort of your own vehicle also allows you to venture off the safari trails and explore remote locations. There is the possibility of observing remote wildlife species or even coming across personal encounters with elephants, zebras and other animals as they roam freely through their natural habitat.

However, before you embark on a safari by rental car, there are a few things you should keep in mind. Make sure you have a good map or GPS to help you find your way around the often sprawling reserves. Find out about park rules and safety precautions to ensure harmonious coexistence between humans and animals. Always respect nature and wildlife and follow sustainable travel guidelines.

A safari by rental car is an exciting and unique way to explore the wildlife of Africa. The combination of freedom, flexibility and the ability to design your own itinerary allows you to have an intense and personalized safari experience. So grab the keys, open the window and feel the thrill of driving through the endless expanses of Africa and discovering the wilderness on your own. A safari by rental car will undoubtedly be an unforgettable adventure that will deepen your love for nature and wildlife.

Tips for your South Africa car rental round trip

A South Africa car rental round trip requires good planning and preparation. Here are some important tips that will help you optimize your trip:

Book your rental car in advance

It is advisable to book your rental car before you start your trip to ensure you get the vehicle you want and the best rates. Compare quotes from different providers and make sure you take out all the necessary insurance. No matter which provider you choose, be sure to include an emergency number to contact in the event of a breakdown or damage.

Plan enough time for each route

Each of the featured itineraries has its own highlights and points of interest. Allow enough time to enjoy each place to the fullest and experience unforeseen adventures. It is advisable to allow at least a week for each route. Also, do not underestimate the distances and speed limits – these are, unlike in Germany – 120 km/h on highways.

Consider the season and the climate

South Africa has a diverse climate that can vary by region and location. Find out in advance about the weather and the best times to travel for each route. Remember that the summer months in South Africa are from December to February, while the winter months are from June to August.

Pack appropriate clothing and equipment

You should pack appropriate clothing and equipment for your South Africa car rental tour. Think comfortable shoes, sunscreen, a hat, a camera and a light jacket for cooler evenings. Don’t forget to pack swimwear too, as many routes pass beautiful beaches.

Be prepared for road traffic

Road traffic in South Africa can be challenging at times, especially in larger cities. Observe traffic rules, drive defensively and be especially careful in rural areas where animals may appear on the road. Especially on the way to the Cape of Good Hope, you may encounter baboons even before you reach the national park. It’s best to always have a GPS or map handy for orientation. And don’t forget: South Africa is a left-hand drive country.

Explore local cuisine and culture

A rental car tour offers you the opportunity to experience the diverse South African cuisine and culture during your vacation. Sample local specialties such as braai (South African barbecue), bobotie (traditional minced meat dish) and biltong (dried meat). Also visit local markets and cultural events to experience authentic South Africa. In and around Cape Town, in particular, there are a variety of offerings to suit everyone.

Refueling in South Africa

Unlike in Switzerland or Germany, you do not have to refuel your car yourself in South Africa. As soon as you stand at the gas pump, a gas station attendant will serve you. You can decide for yourself whether you want to fill up with a full tank or whether you want to fill up for a certain amount. It is customary to clean the windows of the car during the refueling process. For the tip you should always have a few coins with you. It is then convenient to pay by credit card or cash.

What you should pay attention to

Driving a rental car through South Africa is the most flexible and individual way to explore the country. Most roads are very well developed and only in a few areas you would need an off-road vehicle.

Plan your trips so that you arrive at your destination before nightfall. Potholes, breakdowns or poorly signposted road works can otherwise become a safety hazard.

In deserted areas, it happens from time to time that accidents are faked and helpers are robbed. Therefore, do not stop with the car, but call the police.

Do not leave anything in the car and always lock the car.

Conclusion

A South Africa car rental tour is an unforgettable way to discover the diversity and beauty of this fascinating country.
