Through Cape Town in the hop-on hop-off bus, or rather on foot? Should you use public transport? What is the best way to explore the Garden Route? Here we give you tips and suggestions for your adventure.
ATTENTION: In South Africa there is a 0.0 per mille limit for drivers!
When in doubt, treat yourself to an Uber or cab instead.
In Cape Town
On foot:
A good idea as long as it’s light out. The pulse of the metropolis can best be felt by strolling along the streets. Nevertheless, you should avoid the townships even during the day.
Uber:
The alternative to cabs enjoys great popularity in Cape Town and can be considered the main means of transportation for visitors, especially at night. They are ideal for driving short distances in the city, especially after a glass or two of wine. Uber cabs are considered extremely safe and are available everywhere. Price-wise, they hardly differ from free cabs.
A little tip: compare the license plate and the driver’s name with the information in the
the app before you get in.
Rental cars:
Within the city, it is easy to drive with a rental car. Nevertheless, you lose some freedom; short distances can also be covered very cheaply by Uber cab, while you should definitely stay sober behind the wheel. To master longer distances outside the city, however, you almost can’t get around a rental car.
MyCiTi buses:
Introduced in 2010 for the World Cup, Cape Town’s bus network is surprisingly good. They are popular with locals and tourists alike. Punctual, clean and modern, these buses are particularly suitable for long-term tourists. To take advantage of the lowest fare, you need the MyConnect card, which you can buy and top up right at the airport. From then on, everything runs digitally, with contactless machines in the buses or at the stations. The card pays for itself after just three journeys: one-way tickets are considerably more expensive.
Private chauffeur:
If you want to plan your vacation with our help, we can provide you with a driver for certain excursions who will pick you up from your hotel and bring you back safely. This way, you can experience your vacation in the Mother City in an active yet stress-free way.
Hop-On Hop-Off:
The popular tourist buses are also well known in Europe. With them you can explore many highlights of a city in a short time. In Cape Town, there are two routes that call at all the well-known destinations.
In the surrounding area
Rental car:
There is hardly an alternative to a rented car when it comes to longer distances outside the city. Both the rental and the fuel are very cheap, especially for long term rentals. You can reach all destinations in the Winelands, drive along the Garden Route through wild national parks and find your own way through the country – of course only where you are allowed to drive without a guide. And the best: We take care of a reliable rental car, if you plan your vacation

Train:
The train across the country has a sparse network of routes and a low standard of quality. Since it is very cheap, it is used almost exclusively by locals. If you decide to take it, we strongly recommend that you use first class. Basically, however, the train is neither the safest nor the most comfortable option.
Intercity bus:
Similar to the train, intercity bus services are barely usable. The safety leaves much to be desired and the time loss is very high. In general, we advise tourists not to use these buses.
